Born on 28 March 1936, Amancio Ortega Gaona is a Spanish fashion business tycoon and the founder and chairman of Inditex, the fashion series that is most famous for its Zara accessories and clothing stores. For four hours, in 2015, he was named as the richest individual in the world by the Forbes magazine ahead of the other billionaire Bill Gates. His net worth was estimated to be $ 78.6 billion.

Born in Busdongo de Arbás, Ortego left school at the age og 14 and went to La Coruña. He learnt to make hand made clothes as an apperentice with a local shirtmaker named Gala. Confecciones Goa was founded by him in 1972 which sold quilted bathrobes produced by Ortega organizing women as sewing cooperatives. He opened his first store named Zara in 1975 though he liked the name Zorba more than Zara but it was already taken. Many big and splendid Zara stores were opened in the 80s all over Galicia. Ortega owns 59.29% of the Inditex group (Industrias de Diseño Textil Sociedad Anónima) of which Zara is a part. He has almost 95,000 employees in his 7,000 stores which include brands like Massimo Dutti, Zara Home, Zara, Tempe, Bershka, Stradivarius, Pull and Bear and many more.

Ortega prefers a simple lifestyle and is known to keep a low profile. None of Ortega’s photographs were ever published before 1999. Ortega doesn’t usually wear a tie and is generally seen in a dress of white shirt, gray pants and blue blazer. Ortega is recognized in the industry as a man who keeps keen interest in the production and designing processes. He made headlines in the Spanish financial media due to his 2000 public appearence. He only gave three interviews to journalists in his life and privately announced his retirement in 2011 from the parent company of the Zara chain- Inditex.
